Big Sky Mountain Cabin Restoration

Log cabin wood staining at 7,500 ft elevation

Location Big Sky, Montana
Project Type Residential Exterior & Wood Staining
Square Footage 2,800 sq ft
Elevation 7,500 ft

Before & After Transformation

Big Sky cabin before wood staining - grayed and UV-damaged logs Before
Big Sky cabin after Big Sky Painting restoration - rich, protected wood finish After

The Challenge

This beautiful log cabin in Big Sky faced the extreme conditions that come with Montana mountain living at 7,500 feet elevation:

  • Severe UV degradation - At this altitude, UV radiation is 35% more intense than sea level, causing rapid wood graying and finish breakdown
  • Failed previous stain - Film-forming stain applied 5 years prior had cracked and peeled, trapping moisture against the wood
  • Wood checking - Large checks (cracks) had developed in logs, allowing water infiltration
  • Insect damage signs - Early evidence of wood-boring beetle activity required treatment
  • Short weather window - At Big Sky elevation, ideal staining conditions only exist for 4-5 months per year

Our Solution

We implemented our specialized high-altitude log home restoration process:

  • Gentle media blasting - Corn cob media removed failed finish without damaging wood fibers or profile
  • Borate preservative treatment - Applied Tim-bor to all logs for insect and fungal protection
  • Check repair - Filled major checks with flexible backer rod and premium caulk
  • Penetrating oil stain - Sikkens Cetol LOG & SIDING with maximum UV blockers
  • Two-coat system - Applied wet-on-wet for maximum penetration and protection

High-Altitude Wood Staining Challenges

☀️

Intense UV Radiation

At 7,500 feet, UV radiation is 35% more intense than at sea level. Standard stains fail within 2-3 years. We use only maximum-UV-blocker formulations designed for mountain applications.

❄️

Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Big Sky experiences 150+ freeze-thaw cycles per year. Film-forming stains crack and fail. We use penetrating oil stains that move with the wood rather than sitting on top.

💨

Wind-Driven Snow

Horizontal snow exposure means water contacts walls constantly. Our check filling and chinking inspection ensures no entry points for moisture infiltration.

🌡️

Short Season

Ideal staining conditions at Big Sky elevation exist only May-September. We schedule projects precisely to work within proper temperature and humidity windows.

Log Home Maintenance Tips

Keep your mountain cabin looking great between professional applications:

Annual Inspection

Check for new checks (cracks), peeling finish, and signs of insect activity each spring before the season.

Clean Regularly

Wash walls annually with mild soap solution to remove pollen, dust, and mildew that accelerate finish breakdown.

Address Issues Early

Small touch-ups and caulking repairs are inexpensive. Waiting leads to major restoration projects.

Recoat on Schedule

Plan for maintenance coats every 3-5 years depending on exposure. South and west walls need more frequent attention.
